Abstract

Interactive media present a recent and potent vehicle for advancing the stories of environmental protection. With the popularity of digital learning environments and streaming sites increasing over the last couple of years, interactive media have proven to be an excellent way to advance the stories of protecting the environment. The present paper explores the impact that digital media have had on the public perception of conservation issues. Some examples include immersive documentary experiences, virtual simulations, and educational games. These are documentary experiences, virtual simulations, and educational games. Based on the two strands of theory; media interactivity (Jenkins, 2006) and environmental communication, we conclude that interactive digital media are a better tool for engagement through experience-based learning, increased empathy, and actionable insight toward environment stewardship. As an example, on the platforms of EcoQuest and Endangered Earth, gamified elements trigger participation through rewards toward real-life activities of conservation, leading to vast public awareness and participation (Smith & Lee, 2021). This paper would explain the role interactive media would assume in digital learning environments for conservation education and propose some ways to maximize such a potential while limiting the negative aspects of interactive media.
