Abstract

In our current society, the digital revolution has drastically altered the way in which knowledge, authority, and public opinion are constructed. Whereas in the past public intellectuals (scholars, journalists, philosophers, and academicians) used institutional authority, critical reason and scholarship to mold discourses, a new cohort of digital content creators (influencers) increasingly replaced public intellectuals as key players of knowledge in contemporary society through platforms such as YouTube, Instagram, TikTok, and X. This research paper critically analyses the shift from public intellectuals to the authority of influencers within digital media culture, platform capitalism, and the attention economy. Through the method of qualitative analysis with secondary data of various scholarly articles and media studies, this paper analyses how credibility, legitimacy, and authority have been redefined through algorithms, visibility markers (e.g. number of likes, shares and followers) and participatory media environments. This paper found that influencer authority is established and maintained based on authenticity, parasocial relationships with followers, emotional engagement and relatedness rather than evidence-based argumentation. While influencer culture increases the accessibility and democratisation of knowledge, it also has contributed to misinformation and shallowness of discussion, as well as to the commodification of knowledge. This paper suggests the implementation of digital literacy, ethical codes for influencers, algorithm reforms and hybrid intellectuals as remedies to these problems, in order to retain healthy public discourse in a democratic society.
