Abstract

In light of the Smart Grid idea, distribution networks will see a significant metamorphosis over the following years to facilitate the development of a more durable, dependable, sustainable, affordable, and efficient system. Modernization can only be accomplished via the widespread application of information and communications technologies to integrate and control this system. In this sense, distributed data storage and parallel processing are two features envisaged as being made practical by cloud computing. This article presents an overview of the key connected works in the field and highlights the possible uses of cloud computing in innovative distribution systems. Along with the basics of cloud computing, it also describes the fundamental advances and technologies underpinning intelligent distribution systems.
