Abstract
We introduce the architecture of a brand-new, performance-focused serverless computing platform built with .NET, hosted on Microsoft Azure, and using Windows containers for function execution. We detail implementation difficulties, including function scaling, container lifespan, reuse, and discovery. We describe metrics to assess serverless platform execution performance and run experiments on our prototype, AWS Lambda, Azure Functions, Google Cloud Functions, and IBM’s Apache OpenWhisk deployment. We analyze the scaling and instance expiration trends in the implementations and find that; at most concurrent levels, the prototype outperforms competing platforms in terms of throughput. We also highlight future research to explore the shortcomings and limits of our existing design and offer potential solutions.
