Abstract

The rapid growth of smart cities necessitates the development of efficient and reliable communication systems to support diverse applications such as intelligent transportation, healthcare monitoring, and energy management. Digital-analog hybrid communication systems have emerged as a promising solution to meet these demands by combining the benefits of digital and analog technologies. These systems enable high-speed data transfer, reduced latency, and enhanced energy efficiency while addressing the limitations of purely digital or analog systems. This paper presents a comprehensive overview of recent advancements in digital-analog hybrid communication systems tailored for smart city applications. Key innovations discussed include spectrum efficiency optimization, adaptive modulation techniques, and real-time data integration capabilities. Additionally, the integration of these systems with Internet of Things (IoT) frameworks and Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools is explored to demonstrate their potential in optimizing smart city operations. Challenges such as interference management, scalability, and standardization are critically analyzed, along with potential solutions to overcome them. The discussion is supported by recent studies and real-world implementations from urban centers worldwide, highlighting the transformative impact of hybrid systems on modern cities. This paper also identifies future research directions and technological trends to further enhance the performance of digital-analog hybrid communication systems. By addressing the specific requirements of smart cities, this study contributes to bridging the gap between theoretical advancements and practical implementations.
