Abstract
Precipitation measurement plays a vital role in enhancing agricultural practices, enabling better decision-making, effective crop management, and optimal water resource utilization. Reliable precipitation data empowers farmers to fine-tune irrigation schedules, manage fertilizer applications precisely, and develop effective pest control strategies. This comprehensive review aims to explore the various precipitation measurement techniques tailored for agricultural applications, presenting not only an overview of traditional methods like rain gauges and snow courses but also a detailed examination of modern advancements such as radar, satellite remote sensing, ground-penetrating radar, microwave links, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and IoT-based sensors. By evaluating the strengths and limitations of each technique, we provide insights into crucial factors such as accuracy, spatial resolution, temporal resolution, and cost. Furthermore, we address the challenges and uncertainties associated with precipitation measurement in agricultural contexts including spatial variability, instrumentation errors, and data integration issues; while emphasizing potential solutions. We also identify future directions for research and development aimed at enhancing these measurement techniques, highlighting the importance of advancing sensor technologies, developing data fusion methodologies, and refining modeling approaches. This review aspires to offer a constructive perspective on the current landscape of precipitation measurement techniques for agriculture, showcasing their potential applications in precision agriculture, irrigation management, and ultimately, the optimization of crop yields.
