Abstract

Dragon fruit (Hylocereus spp.) has emerged as a promising crop for arid and semi-arid regions due to its exceptional drought tolerance and ability to thrive in harsh environmental conditions. This cactus species, known for its vibrant, nutrient-rich fruit, offers a sustainable solution to food security challenges in water-scarce areas. Its ability to survive with minimal irrigation, coupled with low soil fertility requirements, positions dragon fruit as an ideal candidate for cultivation in regions with limited water resources. Rich in vitamins, antioxidants, and fiber, dragon fruit is also a valuable crop for improving nutritional outcomes. Moreover, its economic potential, driven by increasing global demand, provides a lucrative opportunity for farmers in arid regions. Advances in agronomy, including optimized irrigation systems and soil conditioning techniques, have further enhanced its cultivation. By tapping into dragon fruit’s potential, arid and semi-arid regions can diversify agriculture, improve livelihoods, and promote environmental sustainability.
