Abstract

Nanotechnology offers an exciting solution to meet the nutrient needs of cereal crops like rice, wheat, and maize, which usually require large amounts of fertilizers. Traditional fertilizers, when used in excess, harm the environment by reducing soil health, lowering fertilizer efficiency, and contaminating water resources. Nano-fertilizers provide a better alternative to these conventional fertilizers, not only for cereals but also for other crops. Nano-fertilizers are incredibly small particles, even smaller than the pores of plant cell walls, allowing them to easily enter plant cells and reach the plasma membrane. Their tiny size gives them a surface area 100 times larger than regular fertilizers, improving their interaction with plant surfaces and making nutrient absorption much more efficient. This increases the nutrient-use efficiency of crops and positively impacts their growth, yield, and drought tolerance. By replacing traditional fertilizers with nano-fertilizers, farmers can enhance the physiological and growth performance of cereal crops while reducing environmental damage. This review discusses how nano-fertilizers affect the growth of cereal crops and their benefits for improving both qualitative and quantitative traits. In conclusion, nano-fertilizers are a highly effective nutrient source for cereal crops and represent a promising tool for sustainable nutrient management in agriculture. They can help boost yields, protect the environment, and ensure efficient use of resources, making them a game-changer in modern farming.
