Abstract
This review paper explores the integration of solar power and GSM (Global System for Mobile Communications) technology in developing sustainable irrigation practices. With the increasing challenges of water scarcity and energy consumption in agriculture, the need for innovative solutions is paramount. Solar-powered irrigation systems provide a renewable energy source that can effectively operate irrigation pumps, reducing reliance on fossil fuels and lowering greenhouse gas emissions. The paper examines various solar irrigation models, including stand-alone and hybrid systems, highlighting their efficiency and effectiveness in different agricultural contexts. By utilizing solar panels, farmers can harness the abundant sunlight to power their irrigation needs, thereby promoting environmental sustainability. Furthermore, the integration of GSM technology enhances the functionality of these systems by enabling remote monitoring and control. Farmers can receive real-time data on soil moisture levels, weather conditions, and system performance through their mobile devices, allowing for timely irrigation decisions and optimal water usage. This review also discusses case studies and pilot projects that showcase the successful implementation of solar-powered irrigation with GSM technology in various regions. The economic implications, including cost savings and increased crop yields, are analysed to demonstrate the viability of these systems for smallholder and commercial farmers alike. Challenges related to the adoption of these technologies, such as initial investment costs and the need for technical knowledge, are addressed. Ultimately, this paper underscores the potential of combining solar power and GSM technology to create sustainable irrigation solutions that can improve agricultural productivity, conserve water resources, and contribute to climate resilience.
