Abstract

Glaucoma is a group of eye conditions that damage the optic nerve, typically due to an increase in intraocular pressure. This can lead to vision loss and even blindness if left untreated. It is often called the “silent thief of sight” because symptoms may not be noticeable until the disease has progressed significantly. Early detection and treatment are crucial in managing glaucoma and preserving vision. Regular eye exams are essential in detecting glaucoma early, as it can often be asymptomatic in the early stages. The most common type of glaucoma, open-angle glaucoma, progresses slowly and can be managed effectively with medication, laser treatment, or surgery. However, if left untreated, the damage to the optic nerve can be irreversible. It is important for individuals at higher risk, such as those with a family history of glaucoma or certain medical conditions, to be proactive in monitoring their eye health and seeking regular check-ups with an eye care professional (1-4).
