Abstract
L-Arginine is a basic endogenous amino acid and the only substrate of Nitric Oxide Synthase (NOS), responsible for producing Nitric Oxide (NO), a messenger molecule that has numerous effects on cardiovascular system (blood vessels and heart). Nitric Oxide is a Vasodilator which has been seen to reduce Hypertension, Atherosclerosis and other Cardiovascular diseases. Some clinical studies involving healthy volunteers or patients suffering from hypertension and diabetes indicate that it may also regulate vascular homeostasis. Data collected from recent studies suggest that L-arginine could be one of the possible therapeutic molecules to treat different cardiovascular disorders. The majority of L-arginine’s documented cardiovascular effects are mediated by nitric oxide synthase’s conversion of L-arginine to nitric oxide. L-arginine supplements have demonstrated efficacy in treating the clinical manifestations of a number of disorders linked to vascular dysfunction.
