Abstract

In the modern era of healthcare, clinical laboratories face mounting pressure to deliver accurate, timely and cost-efficient diagnostic testing. Automation has emerged as a critical enabler for meeting these demands by integrating robotics, informatics and advanced instrumentation into laboratory workflows. This review explores how automation has evolved in clinical laboratories and discusses its implications for the future of diagnostics. It begins with an overview of previous manual and semi-automated methods, outlines the intrinsic limitations of such traditional approaches, and then examines the recent trends in automation—including total laboratory automation (TLA), laboratory information management systems (LIMS), artificial intelligence (AI) and connectivity frameworks. Key advantages such as improved turnaround time, higher throughput, enhanced quality and data traceability are analysed. The review also considers the challenges and caveats of implementing automation, including cost, staff training and integration issues. Finally, the article argues that automation is not simply a tool for task‐reduction, but a transformational force poised to reshape diagnostic strategies, enabling precision medicine and more efficient patient care. As the volume and complexity of laboratory tests continue to expand, automation stands as a foundational pillar for the future of diagnostics.
