Abstract

Water is a vital resource that has an impact on social, economic, agricultural, environmental, and health aspects of world development. Achieving social fairness, economic expansion, and public health while preserving ecosystems requires efficient management of water resources. The following factors pose a threat to the sustainability of water resources: overuse, pollution, urbanization, and inadequate governance. However, improvements regarding technology and involvement from communities have led to better water management and quality. Examining the complex problems that impact water sustainability, assessing the effects of new technologies and regulatory frameworks, and investigating integrated management approaches to improve the resilience of water resources are the objectives of this research. Key discoveries about the significance of water in accomplishing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), including enhanced sanitation, poverty reduction, and climate adaptation, are highlighted in the study. Several notable issues are contamination, inadequate facilities, unequal access, and a shortage of water. The National Rural Drinking Water Programme in India serves as a case study to highlight effective tactics and lessons discovered about rural water access. The focus of future directions is on bolstering policies, supporting community-based initiatives, and filling research gaps.
