Abstract

The demand for energy is growing, and the use of excessive fossil fuels impacts the environmental factors that lead to finding a sustainable alternative to fossil fuels. Biofuels are fuels that have become popular as an alternative option since they are renewable, generate less greenhouse gas, and have the ability to reduce dependence on limited fossil fuel stocks. Biofuels can be produced from many sources, including organic components like biomass, algae, and agricultural residues. Biofuels are very useful in the industry for power production and transport services. This is a detailed review paper that provides information including biofuel types, production processes, merits, demerits, and much more. Biofuel is divided into three generations including 1st generation, 2nd generation, and 3rd generation. Biofuels which undergo some consideration of emerging technologies and uses of biofuel that is good for the environment or sustainable for the environment. Some challenges affecting the production of biofuels like production cost, land use conflict, and energy efficiency.
